Cueva de los Verdes

Cueva de los Verdes (Haria municipality, Lanzarote) – located 30 minutes (27 km.) via car northeast of Arrecife, this is one of Lanzarote’s main eco-tourist destinations. The tunnel formed by La Corona Volcano is one of the longest and most interesting on the planet. All along it, there are at least sixteen “Jameos” (a jameo is a volcanic cave with a collapsed roof). Over six km. of the tunnel have been explored, and they extend from the crater of the volcano before entering the sea in an underwater stretch of 1 ½ km., known as the “Túnel de la Atlántida” (Tunnel of Atlantis).

Mainly during the 16th and 17th centuries, Lanzarote suffered cyclical episodes of enormous instability owing to continuous invasions, raids and kidnappings by pirates from the northern coast of Africa. Historical evidence has been found which shows that the intricate galleries in the Cueva de los Verdes served as a hiding place and refuge for the island’s decimated population. Admission: €9.50 (adult), €4.75 (children ages 7-12 years). Hours: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.
