Monumento al Campesino

Monumento al Campesino
Monumento al Campesino (Ctra. Arrecife a Tinajo, 35559 Mozaga) — the Monumento al Campesino erected by the artist César Manrique in the year 1986 is a memorial in honour of the hard working peasant farmers of Lanzarote. It is a rough sculpture in white building blocks made into a fantasy figure of a Lanzarote farmer and camel. The blocks are actually empty containers formerly used to store water in. The great white sculpture with its height of 15 meters stands out on a hill against the blue sky also resisting against the heavy winds of Lanzarote.
The monument is built on the east entrance to the “La Geria” from the village San Bartolomé and is visible from far away. From the Monument, the carefully laid path of volcanic slabs leads into a house museum, the Casa-Museo. a life-size reconstruction of a typical farm of the past, replicating how former inhabitants would have lived.
A “tapas-bar” can be found nearby the monument. An excellent restaurant is also to be found in the complex of nearby buildings. In addition, a huge subterraneous hall with a domed roof and underground passages in lava stone with little water falls is available for festivities, conferences and concerts. Free admission. Hours: 10:00 am – 5:45 pm.
